White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra)

White Turtlehead

Photographer: George Lienau

White to pale pink flower shaped like a turtle's head are carried in clusters over dark green foliage. They form clumps, and do well in shade. Turtleheads prefer wet soil but tolerate average garden conditions.

They have medicinal value and are used by herbalists and Indians for liver diseases, sores and as a laxative.

Bloom time: Late August through early September
