The oldest plant conservation organization in the country, the New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) is a leader in regional plant conservation programs and native plant studies. Garden in the Woods is our 45-acre botanical garden, containing the largest landscaped collection of native plants in the Northeast (over 1500 taxa).  The Society’s native plant nursery at Nasami Farm produces over 35,000 plants for sale to the public and for Garden displays.  The Society also owns and manages several sanctuary properties throughout New England, as well as leading conservation initiatives and projects within the region. 

NEWFS has provided internships for the past several decades, offering interns and fellows experiences in native plant cultivation, nursery production, plant/land conservation, and youth through adult education programming.

Plant Records Intern – Horticulture Department

The Plant Records Intern will work as part of the team in the Horticulture Department. We are seeking an energetic person who is enthusiastic about native plants and about becoming part of a dynamic conservation organization. The ideal candidate will have some prior experience and avid interest in plant taxonomy/plant systematics, database management, and public garden/ museum management. Among regular activities are data entry, inventory, manufacturing plant labels, verifying records, collecting specimens, and communicating with other staff.

Candidates should have education in Horticulture or related studies. Equivalent work experience and willingness to learn will be considered. Deep interest in native plants, superior spelling ability/data accuracy, and ability to work with scientific nomenclature are essential. The Plant Records Intern will interact positively with other departments, staff and visitors, as well as communicate effectively both in writing and in person.

Application deadline is May 18, 2007, or until position is filled. This is a six-month, full-time position. Internships with New England Wild Flower Society include benefits such as departmental field trips, option to participate in classes, plus access to our library resources. There is a housing option provided by the Society for non-local candidates, and worker’s compensation insurance is provided. Additional insurance is not provided by the Society. Interns will receive a weekly stipend of $240/wk.

Position:  Native Plant Horticulture Internship

Description: The Interns will gain hands-on experience identifying and cultivating North American native plants in a botanical garden setting.  As part of this experience interns will assist in all aspects of botanic garden management for Garden in the Woods to include: use of proper horticultural practices (such as planting, pruning, weed management, soil fertility, and irrigation), renovation and construction of new gardens, inventory and plant record keeping, and public education. This is an opportunity to gain useful experience working alongside staff caring for gardens and natural areas, planning and leading projects, writing articles, and managing volunteers.  Interns will get a chance to complete a special project of their interest, participate in educational activities, network with professionals, and attend field trips. Provides a break into both horticulture and native plant studies. Candidates should have some familiarity with horticultural practices and botanical understanding.  2007 NURSERY INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS

Position:  Nasami Farm Native Plant Nursery Propagation/Production Internship

Positions: Two positions at Nasami Farm, Whately, MA; 1 intern for 6 months (April 1- Sept. 31) and 1 intern for 3 months (May 15- July 15).

Stipend: $240/week, plus housing allowance

Description: Interns gain hands-on experience propagating, and cultivating a wide variety of North American native plants. As part of this experience, interns assist in many facets of nursery operations, including propagation, potting, irrigation, growing on, retail plant sales, record keeping, coordinating volunteers, and providing public information. Interns also undertake a special project suited to their interest, attend education classes, network with professionals, and attend field trips.  This is an opportunity to learn more about native plants and to gain useful experience in both nursery operation and management.

Position:  Garden in the Woods Native Plant Retail Nursery Internship

Positions: one 6-month position at Garden in the Woods starting in March or early April.

Stipend: $240/week. Free housing is available at Garden in the Woods.

Description: Interns gain hands-on experience with wide range of North American native plants in a retail nursery operation.  Interns assist in nursery operations, including plant care, plant sales, shipping, record keeping, marketing, and promotion. Other activities include stock bed care, seed and cutting collection and processing, coordinating volunteers, and providing public information. Interns also undertake a special project suited to their interest, attend education classes, network with professionals, and attend field trips.  This is an opportunity to learn more about native plants and to gain useful experience in both nursery operation and management.

Conservation Fellowships with the
New England Wild Flower Society
The Herbert J. Esther M. Atkinson Conservation Fellowship and The Lovejoy Conservation Fellowship

The New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) is a leader in regional plant conservation activities. The New England Plant Conservation Program (NEPCoP), the Plant Conservation Volunteer (PCV) Corps, and the Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE) programs utilize professional and citizen volunteers to perform a variety of plant conservation activities throughout New England. Volunteers in these innovative, award-winning programs are involved in all aspects of plant conservation including rare species monitoring, habitat management, invasive species monitoring and control initiatives, reintroduction and augmentation, and long-term conservation planning. NEPCoP and PCV programs work closely with each state heritage program as well as conservation organizations in each state. IPANE is a collaboration between NEWFS, University of Connecticut, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.  The 2007 Fellows will be involved in all three programs in a variety of ways, from coordinating volunteers and entering data to conducting botanical surveys, management projects, and other field actions.

Description:
The Fellows will assist in all aspects of administering the conservation programs of NEWFS, including data retrieval from the heritage programs, data entry, conducting training programs, obtaining landowner permission, and sending out volunteer assignments. Additionally, the Fellows will assist in the planning and implementation of restoration and management activities, invasive species initiatives, general floristic surveys and PCV field trips to botanically interesting locations throughout the region. NEWFS employs two fellows each year.

Skills:
Candidates should have some familiarity with the flora of New England, ecological processes and studies, excellent speaking and writing skills, good phone skills, a willingness to call landowners, and a sense of humor. Fellows must respect and maintain the confidentiality of rare species locations. Additionally some long days in difficult situations (hot, buggy, and wet) are required.

Bottomline:
Fellowships are full-time, six month positions.  Practicum/Internship credits are available.
Starting date: flexible, as early as March 1st, but no later than June 1st.
Stipend: $240.00/week and housing is provided
