“On certain afternoons you can walk through the forest and hear the crunching of exploding ballistic seed pods.”

Dear Members and Friends,
We invite you to celebrate with us the late summer and the early fall harvest time of fruits and seeds, and our other harvest — the many rewards of a personal connection with native plants. September is a wonderful time to plant, to complete conservation fieldwork projects, to sign up for classes and trips, to come to a September ROCK ON! festival, and to savor the sights and sounds of a glorious time in New England.
Back to Native Plant School. Your Fall/Winter Program Catalog arrives in the mail soon with many NEW programs this year. Farm fresh! The Nasami Farm fall season is in full swing in Whately, Massachusetts, on September weekends, Friday-Sunday, starting the weekend of September 8, and continuing on the weekends of September 15, and 22, with FREE demonstrations each Saturday and the best load of native plants ever! Don’t miss the remarkable beauty of the farm, some of the rarest plants, and the “Native Ornamental Grasses” talk on opening weekend. The Society is also cosponsoring a series of FREE lectures at the nearby Conway School through the fall. Do you want to receive more Nasami News? Send your email to Membership Director Karen Pierce at kpierce@newfs.org with “Nasami Farm” in the subject line for fresh news.
Perfect planting is part of the joy of the fall season and whether you visit the nursery on weekends at Nasami, or daily at Garden in the Woods through September 30, you will be rewarded with new and exciting selections. We asked Nicci Cataldo, Plant Sales Coordinator, for a few of her favorites: “I’m impressed with the Ruellia humilis (wild petunia), a violet-colored, continuously flowering, creeping groundcover, also great as a cascading plant for containers. Rhexia virginica (meadow beauty) is in full flower now with magenta blooms and yellow stamens. Talinum calycinum (fame flower) is perfect for a late-blooming rock garden plant, and the viburnum shrubs and aronias are looking particularly fine this year.” For more of “Nicci’s Picks” visit one of our nurseries this fall.
Future stewards of the environment all across the nation who love a certain curious little monkey will see New England Wild Flower Society’s Garden in the Woods’ winter landscape on PBS Television’s new “Curious George” show. Check your local listing for airing times of the “Find the Bunny” segment, or in the greater Boston area tune in to Channel 2 at 3:30 pm on September 14 or 20 or November 19. Thanks to our own Environmental Educator of the Year, Bonnie Drexler, for helping to make it happen.

License to conserve. In addition to member support, New England Wild Flower Society’s conservation efforts depend on the support of foundations, including the Massachusetts Environmental Trust. |
| The Trust recently awarded us a grant to help the Town of Bedford, Massachusetts, evaluate the health of their wetlands as a model project for towns throughout New England. We are developing a plan to manage invasive species in the wetlands, perform a control project, and train town citizens to identify and control invasive plants in their wetlands. The Trust funds these programs primarily by the sale of specialty license plates through the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Please help us thank them by considering purchase of one of their specialty plates. Go to http://www.mass.gov/rmv or log onto www.massenvironmentaltrust.org to learn more. |
To a glowingly happy season,
- Debra
